Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

If we are thinking of detectors in our house then the first thing that will come to most peoples mind is a smoke detector. They are generally a requirement by law for them to be present in rented properties and it is also strongly advised that any private home owners have them installed as well. However what about carbon monoxide detectors? Firms like Vivint offer these as part of a home automation and energy system however are they really necessary and do they do much good or are they just another expense?

It is often called the silent killer because carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless and thus it can’t be detected in the way in which you would smell a gas leak or actually see smoke. Hundreds of people every year are killed by high levels of carbon monoxide for the very reason that it is incredibly difficult to detect. Indeed, an average home should have no more thanĀ  5 parts per million present however how do you even determine this if it is virtually undetectable? Well, many Vivint reviews have lumped praise on the carbon monoxide detectors that are now part of most home automation systems.

At first glance they do not look much more than an ordinary smoke detector however they are different and a very powerful device. They keep a track of the levels of this lethal gas in the air and if they level should rise beyond the non-lethal dosage or if it is even getting close to crossing the line then it will sound an alarm and you will be notified to the danger that is present. It is hard to determine how many people’s lives have been saved with these devices however it is advised that you do not take the risk and invest in one right away.
